Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta

The 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Interim Berlinetta bridged the LWB and SWB eras, blending classic proportions with modern design. Only 7 were built, all race-ready.

Ferrari 250 GT Interim

The 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta represents a pivotal evolution in Ferrari’s 250 series, bridging the gap between the earlier long-wheelbase «Tour de France» models and the later short-wheelbase (SWB) variants. This model is often referred to as the «Interim Berlinetta» due to its transitional features.

Design and Development

In 1959, Ferrari introduced the «Interim Berlinetta» to test design and engineering changes before fully committing to the SWB platform. These models retained the 2,600 mm wheelbase of the LWB cars but featured updated bodywork designed by Pininfarina and constructed by Scaglietti. Notably, the Interim Berlinettas incorporated design cues that would later define the SWB models, such as a more compact and aerodynamic profile.

Chassis and Suspension

The chassis, designated Tipo 508, was constructed from oval steel tubes, providing a rigid yet lightweight structure. The front suspension utilized independent double wishbones with coil springs and hydraulic shock absorbers, while the rear featured a live axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and hydraulic shocks. This setup offered improved handling characteristics, especially beneficial for racing applications.

Only 7 Berlinettas were produced with these chassis numbers: 1377GT, 1461GT, 1465GT, 1509GT, 1519GT, 1521GT and 1523GT.

Engine and Performance

Powering the 250 GT Berlinetta was the Colombo-designed 3.0-liter V12 engine, specifically the Tipo 128D variant for the Interim models. This engine produced approximately 260 horsepower, enabling the car to achieve top speeds around 167 mph (estimated). The engine was paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, delivering power to the rear wheels.

Production and Legacy

Only seven Interim Berlinettas were produced in 1959, making them among the rarest of the 250 GT series. These cars served as a crucial step in Ferrari’s transition from the LWB to the SWB models, combining elements of both to refine performance and design. Their limited production and unique place in Ferrari’s history make them highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.

Racing Pedigree

The 250 GT Berlinetta series, including the Interim models, had a formidable presence in motorsport. They secured multiple victories in prestigious events such as the Tour de France Automobile, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Targa Florio. These successes cemented Ferrari’s reputation for producing competitive and reliable grand touring cars.
